| Newtonmore is a fine base
for touring, at the junction of the A9 - the Great Highland Road
between Perth and Inverness and the road to Fort William and the
West. Curiously, Newtonmore is as far away from the sea as it is
possible to get on a public road anywhere in Scotland, being 46
miles equidistant from the west coast at Fort William and the east
coast at Inverness. Information on day trips by car from Newtonmore
can be found on
http://www.newtonmore.com/daytour.htm For walkers and climbers, the central nature of Newtonmore means that all of the 4,000 foot plus mountains of Scotland are within easy reach, surrounded by a still wider choice of Munros, whilst just ten minutes away are the crags of Creag Dhu where some of the trickiest climbing routes in Scotland can be found |

| The Area of Badenoch and
Strathspey makes up the western half of the Cairngorms National Park
- the largest national park in Britain. Within the area are a host
of attractions from the
Steam
Railway between Aviemore and Broomhill to the
Cairngorm Funicular Railway and Britain's only
Reindeer Centre. The Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore and Kingussie relates the history of the Highlander in a graphic and entertaining way and for 2008 offers free admission, whilst The Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig is a great way to see Scotland's indigenous wildlife, both past and present. |
